Becoming More Active

As you might know, physical activity is great for our bodies and mind. Both children and adults should be doing certain amounts of activity every week to make sure they keep healthy. 

Did you know that children should be doing 60 minutes of activity every day, while also doing exercises twice per week to strengthen their muscles and bones? 

Adults should be doing 150 minutes across the week (about 30 minutes per day for 5 days of the week) and doing exercises to strengthen their muscles and bones twice a week.

As we mentioned above, being active has so many benefits to your physical and mental health, it’s hard to find reasons not to do it! Physical benefits of being active include:

  • Strong bones and muscles

  • Healthy heart and lungs

  • Better flexibility

  • Improves energy levels

Not only this, but physical activity also has some benefits towards your mental health:

  • Improved mood (happy hormones called endorphins are released when you exercise)

  • Improved self esteem (feeling better about yourself)

  • Better concentration

These are just some examples of how being physically active can help you. Now the tricky bit is becoming more active! It is best to set yourself some achievable goals to help you increase your activity levels. So for example, if you are going from not doing much exercise, to saying you will exercise every day, is not going to be achievable. So you could set yourself a goal of going for a 10 minute walk 2 days a week, and then slowly increase the length of your walk and the amount of times you do it. There are so many ways you can increase your activity levels, find some top tips below:

  • Exercise as a family - having healthy habits together can motivate everyone in the family to motivate each other

  • Plan ahead - have a weekly plan about what activities you are going to be doing and have things to look forward to!

  • Make time to exercise - This comes hand in hand with planning ahead. Setting time aside to dedicate to exercise allows the activity to be done properly and safely.

  • Find a fun activity - enjoying an activity sometimes makes you forget you’re being active

  • Don’t overdo it - you want exercise/activity to be fun, interesting and engaging. By overdoing it you run the risk of making it become less fun and more of a chore.
